Oregon State Car Insurance Requirements
Oregon is different from many states in the minimum insurance requirements that it has set for its motorists.
For starters, though Oregon is not a no-fault state it still requires that all Oregonians obtain Personal Injury Protection (PIP) for their vehicles. Personal Injury protection assists in paying for medical expenses, lost wages and funeral expenses for the insured party no matter who is responsible for the accident.
Another difference is that Oregon also requires that all motorists have Uninsured Motorist protection. Many states do not require their drivers to maintain a minimum amount of liability coverage for their vehicles. If a driver is involved in an accident with a driver that fails to have sufficient coverage, the insured party can be stuck paying for medical treatment and repairs out of pocket. UM protection covers these expenses when the other driver cannot or when the vehicle is damaged during a hit and run.
Oregon also requires that all motorists maintain a minimum amount of liability coverage for each vehicle they drive. Currently, the minimum coverage for bodily injury liability and property damage liability is 25/50/10.
• Bodily Injury Liability- Covers medical expenses for the other driver and their passengers when the insured driver is found to be responsible for the accident. Under the minimum coverage, bodily injury liability will pay a maximum of $25,000 for one person and a maximum of $50,000 for injuries to all persons involved in the accident.
• Property Damage Liability- Covers repair costs for the other driver’s vehicle and any other public and private property damaged during the accident. With minimum liability coverage, the insurance company will pay a maximum of $10,000 for repairs.
With the ever-rising cost of repairs and medical treatment, the minimum state liability requirements for the state of Oregon may not be sufficient to cover the incurred expense. For this reason, Oregon recommends that all motorist obtain liability coverage greater than that which is required along with Comprehensive and Collision coverage to pay for damages to the insured’s vehicle up to Blue Book Value when they are responsible for the accident or when the vehicle is damaged by an act of nature.
