Kansas Car Insurance Requirements

The residents of Kansas are some of the most well insured drivers in the country. Unlike many other states in the country, Kansas is a no-fault state. All no-fault states require their motorists to carry Personal Injury Protection (PIP) to pay each insured motorist’s medical expenses, lost wages and death benefits regardless of who was at fault in an accident. Depending on an individual’s health insurance, the state of Kansas may require its residents to maintain only the minimum PIP policy in the amount of:

• $4000 to cover medical expenses and rehabilitation
• Lost income equal to one month’s salary
• Death benefits for the family
• $2000 for funeral expenses

There are some expenses to the no-fault rule; such as if the medical expenses exceed a certain amount or the accident is deemed too severe, where an individual may be held responsible for the accident. Because of the possibility of these exceptions, Kansans are also required to obtain a minimum amount of liability insurance coverage for bodily injury and property damage protection. The state minimums in thousands of dollars are currently 25/50/10 for Kansas motorists.

• Bodily Injury Liability- Covers medical expenses if the insured party is found to be at-fault in an automobile accident. When the minimum policy is held, the insurance company will pay a maximum of $25,000 if a single person is involved up to a maximum of $50,000 for multiple persons per incident.
• Property Damage Liability- Helps pay for damage to the other person’s vehicle as well as any public or private property, such as buildings and road signs, which may be damage during an accident. Minimum coverage allows for insurance companies to pay up to $10,000 for a single incident.

With the ever-increasing costs of repairs and medical treatment, the minimum liability coverage may not be sufficient to pay for all damages. For this reason, the state of Kansas recommends that its residents obtain liability coverage greater than the required minimums as well as Comprehensive and Collision coverage to pay for damages to their own vehicle if they are found to be at-fault or their vehicle is damaged by an act of nature or wildlife.
Kansas also requires that its motorists obtain Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist protection to cover damages if the driver of the other vehicle fails to maintain sufficient insurance coverage for their vehicle or if the vehicle is damaged in a hit and run.
