The Geo Storm was manufactured by Isuzu in Fujisawa, Kanagawa, Japan, and sold by General Motors in the United States as a model in the Geo brand. The Storm is a compact sports car made for people on a budget. Sold from 1990 through 1993 as a station wagon and a 2-door hatchback, the Storm replaced the Geo Spectrum. The Storm was sold in Japan as the PA-Nero, the Gemini Coupe, and the Impulse. In Canada, the Storm was sold as the Asuna Sunfire.
The Geo Storm was most commonly marketed as a three-door hatchback, with shared front disk and rear drum brakes. All Storm vehicles also had an anti-sway bar which tightened the front suspension. The base Geo Storm model was priced relatively affordably at $10,390, and had better sales than many of the other small General Motors cars of the decade. This model had a SOHC 14 engine, while the more powerful GSi model had a 1.6L DOHC engine and more sophisticated features, such as driving lights, a spoiler, a rear anti-sway bar, and a better transmission gear ratio. The GSi model also cost approximately $1,000 more than the base.
The later 1992 Geo Storm Wagonback was a two-door station wagon priced at $11,450. This model was updated to have a sleeker outside appearance, minus the pop-up headlight covers. Minor interior adjustments to this model were also made, such as interior trim and upholstery, different rear speaker placement, and different stereos. The GSi model, from 1992 to 1993, cost anywhere from $13,645 to $14,560, a significant increase mainly due to a larger 1.8 liter engine. With four cylinders, front-wheel drive, a 1.6-liter engine, and a five-speed manual transmission, the base Storm model only emits 6.60 tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year. The Storm achieves 26 miles per gallon during city driving, and 33 miles per gallon on the highway. This vehicle was rated very highly for acceleration and handling as compared to other sport cars, especially considering its designation as a budget compact car. Modified Geo Storms are sometimes used today in competitive autocross, drag racing, and road racing, albeit infrequently.
