North Dakota Car Insurance

Unlike its neighbor to the south, North Dakota’s motorists have some extra car insurance requirements that they must meet in order to operate their vehicles legally. It is understandable why North Dakotans are required to maintain such extensive coverage, based on their large annual snowfalls, but with extra coverage comes extra cost. CarInsuranceQuotes.com understands the burden automobile insurance premiums can put on a family’s budget and that is why we have partnered with reputable car insurance companies to help our customers find the lowest possible rates online.

North Dakota Car Insurance Requirements

To help keep insurance premium costs as low as possible and lower the frequency of lawsuits that are being filed yearly by North Dakota drivers, North Dakota has become one of the nation’s few no-fault states. Under the no –fault policy, each person’s insurance will cover their medical expenses and repairs regardless of who was at fault in the accident. For this reason, every North Dakotan is required to carry Personal Injury Protection (PIP) to help pay for the medical expenses, lost wages and funeral expenses (if necessary) for the insured driver. However, if a motorist has sufficient health insurance, only a minimum amount of PIP coverage will be required.

There are exceptions to the no-fault rule, however. If the medical expenses exceed a certain dollar amount or if the accident is extremely severe, the driver responsible for the accident will be held responsible for the other driver’s damages. For this reason, North Dakota motorists are also required to carry a minimum liability policy in the amounts of 25/50/25 for bodily injury and property damage protection.

•    Bodily Injury Liability- This type of coverage will pay for the medical expenses of the other vehicle’s occupants when the insured person is found to be at-fault. Under the minimum coverage, the insurance company will pay a maximum of $25,000 for a single person and $50,000 for all occupants of the vehicle.
•    Property Damage Liability- In the event that the insured person is responsible for the accident, property damage liability will pay a maximum of $25,000 for damages to public property, private property and the other involved automobile when minimum coverage is held.

Because the rising costs of medical treatment and repairs make it very easy for the costs of damages to exceed the minimum coverage required by the state of North Dakota it is strongly recommended that all North Dakotans purchase coverage greater than that which is required as well as a Comprehensive and Collision policy to cover their own vehicle when they are at fault or the insurance held by the other party is not sufficient to cover their damages.

Not all states require their drivers to maintain liability coverage equal to the North Dakota minimums and many do not require liability coverage at all. This is the reason every North Dakota resident is also required to obtain Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist protection for their vehicle. UM protection will pay for damages when another driver’s insurance cannot meet the demands or when a vehicle is damaged by a hit and run.

North Dakota motorists saw a significant drop in their car insurance premiums; down from $1991 in 2006 to $1773 in 2007. Unfortunately, because insurance premiums depend on an individual’s driving history, credit record and the type of vehicle they drive, not all North Dakotans can reap the benefits of this decrease.
