Tips for Shopping for Online Car Insurance

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Online car insurance shopping is a lot more difficult than online shoe shopping. If you don’t end up liking those shoes, you can always return them, but if you don’t end up liking your car insurance, you could be stuck. Fortunately, with these online car insurance shopping tips, you’ll be able to find affordable online car insurance that’s right for you.

Tip #1: Get Educated

You can’t expect to go online and get your information right from the car insurance company. If you do that, you’ll be bound to fall for whatever policy they want to sell you. Instead, you should do some online research about different kinds of car insurance policies and ask yourself some important questions. Do you need a policy that covers your own car or just a car that you might hit? Do you need insurance for theft? You can also use the Internet to determine what kinds of factors raise car insurance, like age, type of car, and driving record. By finding the average amount that others in your circumstances are charged, you can get a better idea of what affordable online car insurance is for you.

Tip #2: Determine Your Priorities

Whenever you’re making a purchase, give and take is a big part of it. Often, the give and take includes affordability and quality. This is true when doing online car insurance shopping as well. You will find that the more expensive policies are those that will give you the most coverage. Because of this, you need to decide what is most important to you, a low payment or a high-quality policy. There are many other decisions you will also have to make regarding your priorities. For instance, you will need to determine what kind of a company you want dealing with your car insurance. Car insurance companies offer benefits that make them different from one another. For instance, some car insurance companies may give you the option to manage your account online; some offer monthly payment plans; some have a longer history of service. When you determine your priorities, you’ll be able to make a better decision.

Tip# 3: Watch Your Back

When you’re shopping for affordable online car insurance, there are many providers who will try to take advantage of you. Make sure that you don’t accept any offers that give you a very limited time frame in which to make a decision. It’s also important to always research the company that you are considering before buying into a policy. Factors to research include how long the company has been around and whether they are legitimate. You can also check up on them using the Better Business Bureau.

Car Insurance Quotes: What Factors are Out of My Control?

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Money is tight for a lot of people these days, so obtaining cheap auto insurance quotes is a priority for many. While some of the variables online car insurance companies use to calculate car insurance premiums are under your control, others are not. The following can influence the amount you will have to pay for insurance coverage. Unfortunately, they’re also largely out of your control.

Your age: How old you are is one thing that can prevent you from getting the cheap auto insurance quotes you want. Virtually every online car insurance form will ask for your current age. If you’re under 25 or over 65, your premium will likely be higher than those not in these age brackets.

Your gender: Obviously, your gender isn’t something you can choose, but it will likely affect how much you have to pay for car insurance. In general, males, and in particular younger males, will have to pay higher premiums than females of the same age.

Your marital status: If you’ve tied the knot, your premiums will generally be lower than those of your single counterparts.

Where you live: While it’s true that you can choose where you live, it’s unlikely you’re going to uproot your entire family just so you can pay less for car insurance. City dwellers can, in general, expect to pay more to insure their vehicles. There are several reasons for this. Since there are more cars on the road, the chances of an accident occurring are higher. Also, thefts are more frequent in urban areas.

Will Personal Bankruptcy Affect My Auto Insurance Rate?

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Will personal bankruptcy affect your auto insurance rate? The quick answer is yes. If you file for chapter 7 or chapter 13 bankruptcy, you will likely have to pay higher auto insurance premiums. But the amount of the increase will depend on the car insurance company and your personal situation.

If you currently have cheap auto insurance and you declare bankruptcy, your premium will not suddenly skyrocket. The auto insurance company will be unaware of your bankruptcy, unless you request a review of your policy or if you buy a new car. So, you obviously don’t want to volunteer the information to your auto insurance company, or give them any reason to review your policy. You should wait as long as possible before purchasing a new car or requesting a policy review, so your rates don’t go up sooner than they have to.

The only way the bankruptcy will affect your rates is when you actually do shop for auto insurance quotes. The bankruptcy will appear on your credit report, and therefore result in a higher auto insurance quote than if you had good credit.

But, good credit is not the only determining factor when getting an auto insurance quote. Other factors such as driving history, type of car, where you live, etc. weigh just as heavily. So, while the bankruptcy will have an affect, it will not be the only variable. Its also important to note that car insurance companies are also not allowed to deny you insurance because of a bankruptcy.

The best advice is to hold on to your old car and continue with your current policy as long as possible.
