Bill Banning Higher Car Insurance Rates Fails In Detroit

2009-11-13

Shopping around for car insurance can be time consuming. Depending on where you reside in the U.S., your car insurance rate can also differ quite significantly. This is just another reason to do your research and obtain a cost effective car insurance premium. When it comes to cars, Detroit is a city that knows plenty about them. It is somewhat ironic, therefore, that a recent bill in their House of Representatives was designed to make car insurance premiums higher in this self-styled motor city. Already one of the most costly states for car insurance, this bill could lead to further hikes in Michigan's already high world of car insurance rate plans.

Sen. Martha G. Scott, who proposed this bill, asserts that she is trying to protect people living in urban areas from further car insurance rate rises. According to Michigan Senator Alan Sanborn, however, the idea of a bill that would ban higher car insurance premiums in an already struggling economy is simply not the answer. "The bill would result in higher insurance rates for three out of four Michigan drivers," Sanborn said. "I agree we have insurance issues to address, but (this bill) is not the answer." Put simply, it seems that it will be the families and individuals that reside in the suburbs that would feel the pinch and see the car insurance rate prices go up quite significantly.

In the world of car insurance premiums, there are always going to be factors that determine the car insurance rate you will be offered. Urban living compared with more rural driving conditions obviously affects the car insurance you need. In Michigan, however, the subject is embroiled in controversy with the proposal of this bill. It may be valid to try and protect the car insurance premiums of the urban masses, but the question remains as to whether the suburbanites will pay more for their car insurance as a result of this ban. Car insurance premiums can be pricey wherever you live, so a bill to ban the car insurance rate hikes is clearly a good idea for the drivers it is protecting.

Whichever way you look at it, nobody wants to see higher car insurance premiums. The bill to ban higher car insurance rates failed, it would seem, as it was not designed to protect the car insurance rate prices for all Michigan residents. Even though it was clearly not proposed to deliberately penalize suburban car insurance customers, it may have had the effect of impacting their car insurance premiums. Ultimately, the bill was not passed, so the search for affordable car insurance premiums remains of critical importance to residents of urban Michigan.
